The Trials of Penelope
In 2004 I moved to the US and married the love of my life. Here I was, a new immigrant in a
foreign country, starting all over again: new job, new friends, and most of all, adjusting to a new
culture. Although I speak English quite well, I was not familiar with a lot of rather common
practices. This led to numerous fun and hilarious moments. A few months later my husband bought
a house and a push lawn mover, and left for his first tour of duty to the Middle-East. Now I was
really on my own, with no family living close-by. But I refused to pity myself, and instead, decided
to embark on an adventure of a lifetime.

This is not just a blog about my adventures, but rather a compilation of knowledge and practical
information I gathered over the years. Whether you are a new immigrant, a new military spouse
or a new mom, you will definitely find some useful information on this website. I divided the site up
in 3 major themes: lessons from a new immigrant, lessons from a military spouse and lessons from
a new mom
.
O... and you might wonder why I named this site "Trials of Penelope?" Well, there are a lot of
similarities between the life of Penelope of Ithaca and the life of many married women. Penelope
had to take care of her son and run the household while her husband Odysseus was away from
home. Although nowadays the majority of married women might not have to keep hundreds of
suitors at bay, at times we still have to deal with loneliness, fear and worry. Luckily, as the Roman
epic poet Virgil once said, "Love conquers all."
